Some 450 of the 1,172 schools in Iloilo have zero non-readers, according to Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Ernesto Servillon Jr. in his report to the Provincial Education Summit (PES) on Friday, September 12 in Iloilo City.
Servillon expressed optimism of Iloilo’s “gaining ground in addressing literacy and numeracy performance” among learners even as 62% of the 1,172 schools are somehow also populated by non-readers.
The PES is widely regarded as a feeble attempt to shake up the decades-long decline in Philippine education, now in sorry state of being among the lowest ranked in the world .
The PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) results from the 2022 (latest available) PISA cycle which were released in December 2023, show the Philippines with low scores in math, reading, and science. The Philippines also ranked poorly in the 2022 creative thinking assessment, with a score of 14, significantly below the global average of 33.
