NO CLEAR ROADMAP PRESENTED AFTER UNICEF’S “LEARNING CRISIS” WARNING

MANILA – “Mary Grace Piattos” and P125 million spent in eleven days of confidential funds under VP Sara Duterte, then also the Department of Education (DepEd) secretary who pushed for the reinstitution of ROTC while “learning gaps” worsened into learning crisis in schools.

DepEd secretary Juan Edgardo Angara on Wednesday June 18 committed to intensifying efforts to reverse the “learning crisis” within the term of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

The DepEd issued the “motherhood statement” after the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned of the widespread “learning crisis” in the Philippines after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We can manage it pero kailangan ng kilos (but we need actions). And we have the leadership of the President. He has promised to devote resources to it,” Angara said in a media interview.

Angara said a learning crisis describes the students’ inability to learn at the right grade level.

He, meanwhile, reiterated President Marcos’ earlier calls to “focus on the basics,” which includes reading and numeracy, to help learners recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Angara, likewise, mentioned the implementation of summer programs to help learners catch up. (with Stephanie Sevillano
