CONTINGENT PLAN IN PLACE FOR KANLAON “MAJOR EXPLOSION” SCENARIO

MT. KANLAON EXPLOSIVE ERUPTION

DUMAGUETE CITY – Following a “moderately explosive eruption” at 2:55 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13 of Kanlaon volcano in Negros island, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said that contingency plan would remain in case of a major explosion.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Negros Island Region (NIR) were able to proclaim the election winners in Negros Oriental on Tuesday, May 14 despite rhe eruption hours after voting ended.

“There were no significant incidents reported given that in the previous days, there were indications of a potential major eruption based on Phivolcs reports,” Comelec NIR director Lionel Marco Castillano said in an interview.

Proclaimed were Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria as governor; Fritz Diaz, vice governor; incumbent 2nd district Rep. Manuel “Chikiting”
Sagarbarria as Dumaguete mayor; Emmanuel Iway, 1st district Rep.; Maisa Sagarbarria, 2nd district; Janice Degamo, Rep. 3rd district; and Sangguniang Panlalawigan members.
