LANDMARK ATOMIC ENERGY LAW SIGNED

Energy secretary Sharon Garin on Thursday, September 25 cited the signing into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, of the Philippines Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM) Act as a big step to the government’s energy sufficiency bid.

Marcos Jr. signed the PhilATOM law, or Republic Act (RA) 12305, establishing the country’s first nuclear regulatory body on September 18, 2025.

“The passage of RA 12305 strengthens the regulatory framework that will enable the safe and secure peaceful use of nuclear energy in the country. The law modernizes nuclear regulation consistent with the latest International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards and global best practices,” Garin said.

She noted that generation of electricity from nuclear energy will remain subject to the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) and under the regulatory oversight of the DOE and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
